Atlético Ottawa have added attacking reinforcements ahead of the Canadian Premier League run-in, announcing the loan signing of Mexican forward Antonio Álvarez from Club América through the end of the 2025 season.
Álvarez, 21, arrives from one of Mexico’s most storied clubs, having developed in América’s youth system and made four senior appearances in Liga MX, scoring once. He also featured regularly for the club’s U20 and U23 sides.
"He's a very technical player, with amazing one-on-one capacities and a strong ability to connect with his teammates,” Ottawa head coach Diego Mejía said. “He can play in the pocket or out wide. Toño is going to be a great fit.”
Álvarez, who becomes the latest addition from Atlético’s Mexican connections to join the squad, pointed to Ottawa’s ambition as a key factor in his decision.
“Diego spoke very highly of the CPL and the club’s vision,” Álvarez said. “It was an easy choice. I want to win, and I feel confident that I’ve joined a team that’s on that path.”
The pacey attacker describes himself as someone who likes to lead with the ball at his feet and play at speed. He will be eligible for selection on Sunday, August 3, when Ottawa host York United (4 p.m. ET on OneSoccer and TSN2).
