The Canadian men’s national has announced its roster for a pair of 2022 FIFA World Cup preparatory friendlies in Europe against Uruguay and Qatar. Canada opens the window against Qatar on Friday, September 23 (1 p.m. ET) at Generali Arena in Vienna, Austria, before meeting Uruguay on Tuesday, September 27 (12 p.m. ET) at Stadion Tehelné pole in Bratislava, Slovakia. Both matches will be broadcast on OneSoccer. The squad features several newer faces including former Cavalry FC defender Joel Waterman, now with CF Montréal. Luca Koleosho, an 18-year-old dual-national who plays for Espanyol in La Liga is also a notable inclusion in the group. As a result of injuries, Doneil Henry (Toronto FC), Atiba Hutchinson (Besiktas) and David Wotherspoon (St. Johnstone) are unavailable. Uruguay are currently ranked 13th in the world, and are on a great run of form in 2022. They have played six matches this calendar year, winning six and drawing one including big wins over Concacaf sides Mexico (3-0) and Panama (5-0) during the June international window. World Cup hosts Qatar have been incredibly busy during 2022, playing 13 official and unofficial friendlies as they prepare for their first-ever tournament appearance. Currently ranked 48th in the world, just five spots behind Canada’s 43, Qatar won the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in dominant fashion, winning all seven of their matches and outscoring their opposition 19-1 in the process.
