On Thursday, Concacaf announced that its annual Champions League tournament will be revamped and expanded, starting in 2023. Concacaf President Victor Montagliani called it a “hugely important development” for club football in the region, and that the new Champions League format “will transform the competition and significantly increase its relevance” throughout the football world. “This is fantastic for Canadian soccer and we are very pleased with yesterday’s announcement as well as President Victor Montagliani’s continuing support. The Canadian Premier League’s mission is to continue to grow the game of football in Canada and this new format provides another opportunity to do that. This format change opens the global game to more Canadian talent and provides more opportunities for Canadian players to be seen on an international stage. It demonstrates that CONCACAF supports and recognizes all the efforts and investments being made to develop and grow the game in Canada.”
