Canada’s fourth and final CONCACAF Nations League Qualifying fixture kicked off in fine – and funny – fashion as Junior Hoilett opened the scoring with a play that was both cheeky and impressive. The Cardiff City winger bounced a throw-in off the back of his own teammate Mark-Anthony Kaye, then picked up across the field, playing a 1-2 off Atiba Hutchinson before firing past the ‘keeper to give Canada a 1-0 lead over French Guiana at BC Place.
Locked at 1-1 entering the final five minutes of the first half, Canadian striker Lucas Cavallini then managed to get on the end of a well-placed cross by Jonathan David to give his team a 2-1 lead over French Guiana. Cavallini, who plays his club football in Puebla, celebrated another goal in this competition, having scored a brace against the U.S. Virgin Islands in the opening tilt, followed by a penalty in a 5-0 win over Dominica in the second fixture.
Fresh after assisting Cavallini for Canada’s 2nd goal, KAA Gent striker David added another goal to his personal tally, breaking through the French Guiana backline and cooly slotting home a low drive to give his team a 3-1 lead. David, 19, now has four goals in as many matches in this competition as his blistering debut continues to chug along nicely.
