On Thursday, a pair of strikers swapped clubs within the Canadian Premier League.
York United announced the signing of 26-year-old Shaan Hundal from Valour, while the Winnipeg club added former York striker 21-year-old Markiyan Voytsekhovskyy.
For Brampton, Ont. native Hundal, this is a homecoming. He is the latest local player the Nine Stripes have added, having initially come through the Toronto FC system.
"It means a lot to me to be signing with a club that prioritizes representing the city and wanting players from Ontario to come back home and play in front of the fans and family," said Hundal. "The club already feels like home and I know a lot of the guys on the team and it’s an amazing atmosphere and something I’m excited to be part of moving forward”.
Hundal would go on to play for Valour FC in two separate stints in the CPL. He also spent a season with Vancouver FC, with whom he scored their first-ever goal in 2023, at York Lions Stadium, no less.
This season, Hundal has scored two goals and added an assist through eight matches played with Valour. He has 15 CPL goals in his career.
Voytsekhovskyy, born in Lviv, Ukraine, signed his first professional contract with York United ahead of the 2023 season. After starting that season well, scoring his first professional goal against Vancouver FC, he suffered a season-ending injury on June 21. Last season, he scored twice more in 14 appearances.
The 21-year-old has struggled for minutes in 2025 under new York United head coach Mauro Eustáquio, with just 19 between two substitute appearances in league action. A player with a lot of potential, he was named League1 Ontario's Young Player of the Year in 2022 while playing for ProStars.
He joins a young striker group in Winnipeg that also includes 23-year-old Jevontae Layne, 19-year-old Erik Pop and 20-year-old Myles Morgan.
York United currently sit in fifth place in the table with a 5-3-6 record (18 points). Valour FC are in seventh at 2-2-9 (8 points).
