Vancouver, BC — May 17, 2025
A pair of second-half goals – both of which came after a 30-minute weather delay – sent
the visiting HFX Wanderers to a 2-0 victory over the host Vancouver FC side on
Saturday evening at Willoughby Stadium.

Ryan Telfer slipped behind the VFC defence for the game’s opening goal in the 59 th
minute before Tiago Coimbra scored in the 94 th minute as the Eagles pressed for the
equalizer.

“Weather delays always change the momentum of the game,” admitted VFC coach
Afshin Ghotbi, adding he’d like to look at the replay as the team felt the play may have
been offside.

Regardless of whether it was or not, Ghotbi said his team simply lost concentration on
the winning goal, allowing Telfer to get free.

“We are all gutted because we felt we played well enough to get something out of this
game,” the coach added.

Statistically, the teams were fairly even over the course of the 90+ minutes with the
shots 14-12 and shots on target 4-2, both in favour of the visitors. Each team had 22
touches in the opposition’s box with VFC holding an edge in possession: 52.8 to 47.2
percent.

Each team had glorious opportunities in the first half with Giorgi Probo forcing Eagles
goalkeeper Callum Irving into a save in the first minute while VFC rang a shot off the
crossbar in the 15 th minute.

“The goals are coming off small mistakes, which we can correct and learn from our
mistakes,” said VFC’s Matteo Campagna. “(And offensively), we are getting in the right
spots, the ball is just not going in.”

The defeat ended a four-game unbeaten streak (1-0-3) for the Eagles who fell to 1-3-2
on the season. The Wanderers sit in second place in the Canadian Premier League at
4-1-2.
