Toronto, ON – July 4, 2025Michael Williams was 15 years old when he got his first call from York United FC. He was walking home from school when his mom shared the news: the club wanted to offer him a development contract.

Three years later, he’s now an 18-year-old goalkeeper with the York United FC Academy. He’s trained regularly with the First Team, travelled with the squad, and has been part of matchday rosters. He’s taken part in warmups in front of big crowds and continues to grow in a professional environment every day.

In this week’s episode of The Pathway, we spend a full matchday with Michael, from pre-game warm-ups through to the final whistle. Along the way, he reflects on his journey so far: from North Mississauga SC and Vaughan SC to training sessions in Portugal and the daily grind of being part of a high-level academy setup.

“Michael has grown with us,” says Head Coach Mauro Eustáquio. “He’s been training with the squad for over a year now. He understands what it means to be a York United player. In recent weeks, he’s been travelling with the team and involved in matchday rosters. We’ve been really pleased with how he’s carried himself and the professionalism he brings.”

He’s a vocal presence on the field, constantly talking, organising, guiding his teammates. By the end of most matches, he’s lost his voice. But he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“He’s a strong goalie with great game awareness and a bright future,” adds Goalkeeper Coach Camilo Benzi.

Michael’s focus right now is simple: earn his first professional minutes in the CPL and sign a full contract with York United FC. Everything he does is with that goal in mind.

Off the pitch, his story is rooted in consistency, effort and family. His mom, who’s supported him at every step, used to shoot balls at him in their front yard using a hockey net. One of those shots hit him square in the face. He got back up, smiled, and asked: “Is that all you got?”

Today, Michael is a clear example of what York United is building. A young Canadian player, developed through our system, earning his place and pushing forward. His story reflects what we stand for: investing in local talent and creating a real pathway to the professional game.
