October 15, 2025 – York United FC is pleased to announce that academy midfielder Anthony Umanzor has signed his first professional contract with the club.
Umanzor, 17, has agreed to an Exceptional Young Talent Standard Player Contract (SPC) that will take effect on January 1, 2026. The contract is guaranteed through the 2027 season, with Club Options for 2028 and 2029. This agreement does not affect his status for the remainder of the 2025 season.
“It’s a true blessing and an honour to sign my first professional contract with my hometown club,” said Umanzor. “Ever since I joined York United in 2024, my goal with the Academy was always to one day play for the First Team. To see that dream become a reality is an incredible and proud feeling — not just for me, but for my family and everyone who’s been part of the journey.”
A native of Toronto, Umanzor has enjoyed a standout year with the York United FC Academy, serving as team captain while making 17 appearances, scoring seven goals and adding four assists. His performances earned him the Academy Player of the Season award and a call-up to El Salvador’s U-17 National Team, where he remains part of the group preparing for the FIFA U-17 World Cup later this year.
“Anthony has been committed to becoming a professional athlete,” said Mauro Eustaquio, Head Coach, York United FC. “His habits on and off the pitch have helped him improve daily and reach competitive levels that have allowed him not only to debut as a professional, but to get him involved at an international level. He is someone who doesn’t back down from a challenge and that mindset has allowed him to be successful in a professional environment.”
Umanzor first impressed York United’s scouting staff during open tryouts before officially joining the Nine Stripes in September 2024. His technical ability, vision and composure quickly stood out as he progressed through the club’s pathway system. Earlier this season, he signed a Development Contract and began training regularly with the First Team — key steps in his progression from open tryouts to the professional ranks.
This contract reflects both the club’s commitment to developing young Canadian talent and Umanzor’s continued growth as one of the most promising prospects in the program.
