On Wednesday evening, the Canadian Premier League officially announced its newest club: FC Supra du Quebec.

At an event held at Complexe Multi-Sports de Laval, the team unveiled its new brand, crest and name – a modern tribute to a historic club within the sport in the province of Quebec.

Here are five things you need to know about the Canadian Premier League newcomers:

What’s the history behind the name?

FC Supra du Quebec’s name is an homage to the Montréal Supra, a club that spent five seasons (1988-1992) competing in the now-defunct Canadian Soccer League.

Despite playing for just five seasons, Supra made a significant impact on the Quebec soccer community and helped to foster and launch the careers of several important figures within the Canadian soccer landscape.

After 32 years, the Supra name has returned, looking to continue the work of their predecessors in developing local talent. Several notable Canadian internationals played for Montreal Supra back in the day, including Alex Bunbury, Lyndon Hooper, current Halifax Wanderers Football Strategy Advisor Mark Watson and Canadian men’s national team assistant coach Mauro Biello.

What’s behind the club’s crest and colours?

The club’s branding also pays tribute to Montreal Supra, with a modern look and feel. That includes retaining the red, blue and white colour scheme, and unveiling a crest that draws inspiration from the original.

With the same iconic white S, which portrays movement and progress, the crest is diamond shaped, representing the blocks of communities within Quebec. The red displays the club’s Canadian pride, while the blue is an ode to the team’s Francophone influence and the white to unity and a bright future ahead.

Where will they play?

Supra will play their home matches at Centre Sportif Bois-de-Boulogne in Laval, Quebec. The stadium was recently expanded to a capacity of 5,581 and is a soccer-specific venue. The club’s offices and training facility will also be on the premises.

The venue serves as the home ground for the NSL’s Montreal Roses, and the complex houses the offices of Soccer Quebec, making it something of an epicentre for the sport in the province.

It was also formerly housed the Comètes de Laval in the USL W-League, a club that competed for 10 seasons between 2006 and 2016, and featured notable national team players like Amy Walsh, Rhian Wilkinson, Isabelle Morneau, Josée Bélanger and a 15-year-old Lysianne Proulx.

Who owns the team?

The ownership for FC Supra du Quebec is made up of a strong group with significant experience in sports and entertainment.

Matt Rizzetta, the Founder and Managing Partner of Underdog Global Partners, who is also the president of Campobasso FC in Italy, and women’s club Donna Roma will serve as the club’s chairman and sit on the CPL’s Board of Directors. He is joined by Angelo Pasto, who is the president of Stanford Properties Group Inc., a Quebec-based real estate firm; Stéphane Tétrault, a French-Canadian entrepreneur; and Quebec-based entrepreneur Jean-François Chenail.

Former Canadian international Rocco Placentino will serve as the club’s president and co-founder. Before joining Supra, the Montreal native served as the technical director for CS Saint-Laurent, and was critical in elevating the organization to its current status as one of the top development clubs in Canada.
