On Wednesday night at Complexe Multi-Sports de Laval, the Canadian Premier League unveiled its newest club, FC Supra du Québec.
An homage to the Montréal Supra, a highly celebrated club that played between 1988 and 1992, the name and brand were revealed with several alumni of that historic team on stage.
The Canadian Premier League’s first-ever club from Québec will kick off their inaugural campaign in 2026, and will play home matches at Stade Boréale in Laval. They have embraced the mantra of being the club “from here, for here”.
“This team is for all of you, all of the kids that are here tonight, all of the clubs that are here tonight,” said FC Supra club president and co-founder Rocco Placentino as he addressed the crowd on Wednesday night. “We will show all of Canada who Québec really is.”
Placentino, the former technical director of CS Saint-Laurent, was the force behind getting this club off the ground, putting in the ground work over multiple years before finding an ownership group capable of making it a reality. His immense impact within the soccer community in the province was made clear when he was given an emphatic standing ovation after he took to the stage on Wednesday night.
For the league, Québec has long been a crucial market, and as such, Wednesday was a significant day in the history of the CPL, as well as the sport in the province and country.
“This is an extremely exciting day for our league and our organization,“ said James Johnson, Canada Soccer Business Group CEO. “It’s an important day for us because expanding into the market was a priority. It was a priority because we know this market has a high participation rate in our sport. It was a priority, because we know that this market develops fantastic footballers, not just at the Canadian level, but now at the worldwide level. We wanted to expand into this market, because we know the community loves the sport and loves soccer, and we know that this community is going to get behind this.”
It was Placentino’s idea to bring back the Supra name to the club, a modern tribute to a club that meant a lot to him when he was growing up, as well as the Québec soccer community.
“I watched them when I was a kid with my dad, my brother, the colours of the Habs, les bleu, blanc, rouge,” said Placentino. “It was a community team, a lot of community players, a lot of fantastic players in the CSL. We wanted to relive that, those moments on a different scale.”
Matt Rizzetta, the Chairman of FC Supra du Québec, echoes those ideas. As an experienced soccer executive who hears a lot of pitches for investment, it was Placentino’s passion for, and the respect he had earned within, the sport in the province that drew him to become involved. The club’s branding reflects that passion.
“We really wanted this project to represent the past, present and current of all things Québec football related,” said Matt Rizzetta. “Obviously, with the World Cup and all the investment that’s pointing into North American football, we understand what the future is all about, but it was also important for us to link the future with the past, and to pay homage to a brand and a club that really paved the way for what Québec football is today.”
Having finally launched and shared their club and vision with the world, the FC Supra organization are now all in on their next mission: getting the team ready for the start of the 2026 campaign.
“Now it’s time to get to work, with six months until we start playing, “said Matt Rizzetta, the Chairman of FC Supra. “We’ll have a good time tonight, but beginning tomorrow, we’re already off to the races getting ready for the season.”
